Released on this day, Lionel Richie’s debut solo studio album self titled ‘Lionel Richie’. It was recorded and released while Richie was still a member of the Commodores. He would leave the group shortly after.

The first single, ‘Truly’, topped the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up single ‘You Are’ reached #4, and ‘My Love’ reached #5.

The album reached #3 on the US Billboard 200, #3 on the New Zealand Albums Chart, and #9 on the UK Albums Chart. It’s certified 4x Platinum in the United States and Platinum in the UK.
